The Sunset Resort is one of Rarotonga’s best-kept secrets. It is an exquisite 3.5-star boutique resort and it is located on the outskirts of the island’s capital Avarua. The 35 room resort overlooks a pristine white sand beach and clear blue lagoon. Nestled in a secluded area, it offers peace and serenity to travelers.
The resort is also a spot for destination weddings. People from all the over of the world come here to get married. You don’t have to worry because the resort will make all the arrangements, including getting a priest or pastor to formalize the ceremony. The arrangements are handled by a professional wedding planner, so no detail will go amiss.
Whatever your budget, there is a suitable room for you at the Sunset Resort. You can choose between studios, suites or two bedroom apartments. Rooms are available with views of the garden, poolside and beach.
Each of the room contains a king size bed (twin single beds are available on request). Standard amenities such as air conditioning, small kitchen (with microwave), refrigerator, clock radio, towels and linen, hair dryer, DVD and TV with satellite cable are provided. The bathroom is very luxurious and is fitted with modern furnishings.
The resort’s in-house restaurant, Anchorage Restaurant serves both daily specials and a la carte menu. This is an open air restaurant. Travelers have commended the restaurant for its seafood. Breakfast is complimentary and is served from 7.30am to 10 am. The restaurant also serves island specials and exclusive Polynesian cuisine. On Sunday nights, the restaurant hosts a BBQ, which is accompanied by live music.
The Drumbeat Bar has happy hours starting at 5 pm. Other alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks are also available at the bar, including a fine collection of international spirits, wines, liquors, and beers. Do try the local Matutu ‘Mai’ beer, which is quite famous on the island.
There is also a bakery across the road (outside the resort). It serves decent sandwiches and other baked products. If you want more eating options, try Kikau Hut Restaurant, Tuoro Restaurant & Bar or Wind Jammer Restaurant, all of which are close by.
The resort has a wonderful beach and you can snorkel just off it. The water is not very deep (waist deep) so it is very safe. Complimentary snorkeling equipment is provided to all guests. There are also two swimming pools in the resort if you prefer to swim.
Head out and hop on to safari tours where you can see more sights on the island, take a kayak to a neighboring Motu (small island), go on lagoon cruises on catamarans or a glass-bottomed boat, go deep sea fishing for tuna, marlin and other oceanic fishes, or even scuba dive after taking lessons in the resort pool.
If you are coming between August and October, you can go whale-watching. The best spots are located on the western side of the island close to Sunset Resort. There is also a golf course located just two minutes away.
There are many markets in Avarua which sell interesting wares. Do make a trip to these markets if you are looking for souvenirs. Cook Island Christian Church is one of the famous landmarks in the city. If you want to go deep water fishing, the hotel’s help desk will be able to make an arrangement for you.
It is a good idea to rent a moped to travel the island. If you are coming from the US, Australia, New Zealand or the EU, your overseas license will suffice. Otherwise, you will have to obtain a temporary Cook Island license.
A number of international flights from Australia, New Zealand and US land at the Avarua International Airport. So transportation into the island is not a problem. You can either ask the resort to arrange for someone to pick you up or you can take a cab from the airport yourself. The resort is quite popular, so getting there won’t be an issue.
